As the International FIFA games draw to a close and the dawn of Super Bowl LVI arrives, both of which will have been or will be hosted by Los Angeles(not to mention the Summer Olympics in 2028 also), it is rather fitting to use terminology from the latter with regards to many of the charter reforms that were supposed to have been on this November’s ballot, including lowering the voting age to 16: Los Angeles city leadership has decided to punt the question into 2028.
This resource summarizes best what many potential reforms on their way to the November ballot experienced, despite overwhelming support. Things like LAPD reforms, Expanding City Council(25 instead of 15), Ranked Choice Voting(RCV), lowering the voting age to 16 and many others did not make it to the ballot, despite strong support from the Charter Reform Commission, which looked at a host of potential reforms that could have appeared on November’s ballot.
However, the City Council has decided to not include them in this year election, with many now looking to have them on the ballot in 2028 instead.
This is a currently developing situation that will likely have additional updates during the course of the summer as a new committee will examine what might be on the ballot in 2028, so continue to check back here for new updates.
